Design of a low level waste size reduction facility. Production of full design with the exception of fabrication of the Low Level Waste Size Reduction Facility located in the Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR) Hall, Dounreay. The PFR Low Level Waste Size Reduction Facility is required to size reduce large primary alkali contaminated items which is essential to reactor hall dismantling. The Low Level Waste Size Reduction Facility is a proposed combined facility comprising two elements (Size Reduction Facility (SRF) and Wet Area Booth (WAB), descriptions below) located within one common secondary containment. The purpose of this facility is to size reduce large redundant Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR) primary sodium wetted components, remove sodium and surface contamination from components and consign the items as Low Level Waste (LLW). The primary containment within both the SRF and WAB will be ventilated, with the ability to also have a nitrogen purge within the primary containment area when needed. The SRF will size reduce using a large band saw as the primary cutting technique, ex Reactor components (maximum diameter if 915 mm x 12 200 mm long and weighing 8 tonnes into a maximum of 1 000 mm lengths prior to transfer into the WAB). The WAB will receive these size reduced items from the SRF or posted in items having sodium deposits of not more than 1kg. Removal of the sodium in the WAB will be by steam washing via lances, hot and cold water washing as well as hands on scrubbing in either an air or nitrogen atmosphere. The footprint of the common secondary containment is approximately 10 m x 6,5m. The estimated footprint of the transfer system for introducing components into the SRF is 13 m x 1,5m.
