This service will be known as the UCL research data service. The service will comprise technologies that enable the federation of multiple data silos at dispersed geographical locations, the management of stored data sets across those sites, enable the interactive ingest and retrieval of datasets by authorised end-users, and provide for the long term storage of required digital datasets. The service should be based on technology that can scale to at least 100PB, store billions of independent files, and provide mechanisms and pathways for retaining data indefinitely. The scope of the work will include all elements of the design, supply, installation, testing, training, commissioning, maintenance and documentation of the solutions provided. It is the intention of the university that this contract may enable the long-term central management of all research digital data produced by UCL researchers. The university in phase 1 will commit to a minimum usable storage service of 1PB supported for 3 years (service storage layer) and the deployment of a software based service that will enable the management of the hardware storage layer and provide the interface to end-users to enable the ingest, data management, search and retrieval of such digital data (service software layer). Through this PQQ we are inviting responses from companies who can fulfil the service storage layer, and / or the service software layer, and / or act as the overall integrator.
