UK-Port Glasgow: ro-ro terminal construction work
Port Ellen Pier Reconstruction. Introduction - Port Ellen Ferry Terminal is situated on the island of Islay and supports CalMac Ferries Ltd (CFL) sailings between Islay and the mainland. Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) has procured a new vessel, the MV Finlaggan, to operate between Kennacraig and the island of Islay from April 2011. CMAL intend to upgrade the ferry terminal, in part to accommodate the new vessel which is larger than the existing ferries which serve the route. The ferry terminal is in a remote environmentally sensitive location with limited access. The site and working space will be limited in area. Accommodation and welfare arrangements for the workforce will need careful consideration due to the remoteness of the site and the limited local facilities. Scope of Works. — construction of a sheet piled pier structure encapsulating the existing pier (plus demolition of the existing pier sufficiently to allow this construction), — provision of new bollards, fenders and other deck furniture, — dredging at the berths to suit the new vessel draught, — relocation of the existing steel linkspan and its machinery from the north berth to the south, including strengthening of the linkspan deck and provision of new supports, — replacement of the linkspan at the north berth with a new reinforced concrete fixed ramp, including construction of a new sheet piled wall to enclose an existing damaged wall and re-profiling the approach to the new fixed ramp, — relocation of the grain gantries, — replacement of existing lighting with new, — design, provision and installation of a new CP system, — demolition of the existing stores building, re-providing housings for incoming electrical supplies and POL tidal monitoring equipment currently housed in the stores building. The design will allow for the construction of the new works around the existing dolphins. This will allow the existing dolphins to continue to be used for occasional berthing and mooring during the construction of the works. The occasional berthing and mooring shall consist of continued use of the pier by the grain boat deliveries, berthing approximately every three weeks and emergency overnight berthing by a CalMac ferry, with 24hrs notice (this will not coincide with use by the grain boat).
