UK-Reading: miscellaneous special-purpose machinery
976 Sand skimmers replacement. Introduction. Thames Water Utilities Limited currently uses slow sand filters (SSFs) form part of the purification process at the following London water treatment plants, Ashford Common, Coppermills, Hampton and Kempton Park. The SSFs are in the open and are periodically drained to enable cleaning by mobile skimmers to maintain both output and water quality. It is essential that the skimming operation is carried out reliably and efficiently so that a filter can be returned to service within the shortest time possible to water quality and filter performance. The sand skimmers currently perform two separate functions simultaneously, firstly to remove weed for which a fixed rake attachment is used and secondly, to remove a layer of dirty sand. Currently a separate machine removes the collected weed from the filter and deposits into a dumper for disposal. The top layer of dirty sand is transferred from the sand skimmer into a following dumper for transportation to a remote sand cleaning plant. It is important to the subsequent performance of the filter that following skimming, the surface of the sand is left as undisturbed as possible. It is also critical that the layer of granular activated carbon (GAC Sandwich™) that lies beneath the sand is undamaged by the skimming operation. Scope. Thames Water aims to award a framework agreement for the supply of sand skimmers in the current AMP5 period (2010–2015). Contracts awarded under the framework agreement may be awarded directly by Thames Water Utilities Limited or by one of its approved contractors or an approved sub-contractor. The supplier will be expected to offer the same levels of service and commercial benefits to Thames Water Utilities Limited and its approved contractors and sub-contractors. This notice is a request for expressions of interest to participate in the bid process to establish the relevant framework agreement.
