UK-Banbury: drinks resource maps. The purpose of this project is to undertake research in order to develop detailed waste and water 'resource maps'; quantifying drink and packaging waste arisings, and water consumption, for a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks sold through the UK retail (off-trade) sector and, where applicable, through the on-trade supply chain. The resource maps will also detail overall company water usage (consumption and disposal). The drinks for consideration are: non-alcoholic drinks (also referred to as soft drinks): carbonates, dilutables, fruit juices and smoothies, still and juice drinks, and bottled water; and alcoholic drinks: beer (lager and ale), cider and spirits (whisky, gin and vodka). For waste (solid and liquid), the aim is to quantify the types of waste, including packaging, being produced in the UK at each stage of the supply chain, provide insights as to why the waste is being generated and enable the identification of priority areas into which interventions can be made to prevent waste or move waste that cannot be avoided up the waste hierarchy. For water, the aim is to quantify water usage, broken down by the same product categories/supply chain steps selected for waste, including the amount of product that is disposed of as effluent. Carbon impact and economic value will also be quantified. For liquid product waste sent to sewer, a methodology should be agreed with WRAP to distinguish liquid product waste, from other water waste sent to sewer. It is recognised that where the supply chain involves imported products or ingredients, the waste occurring in the UK only is of concern for this project; if the cause if the waste is identified as outside of the UK this should be identified. By working with those within the drinks sectors, from the relevant UK associations through to brands producing and retailers selling drinks, a series of detailed recommendations/interventions and benchmarking reports will be developed and disseminated to encourage resource efficient practice in the sector, by both reducing and preventing product (solid and liquid) and packaging waste, and efficient use of water. Examples of good practice are to be identified as well as interventions and will be used to develop case studies and guidance documents, to encourage further change across the different drinks sectors operating in the UK. Environmental issues consultancy services. CPV: 90713000. ...
