South East Scotland real-time passenger information system. The design, supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance of an automatic vehicle location and control (AVLC) system for a public transport bus fleet, consisting of on-board computers and peripheral devices, mobile data communications equipment, bus stop display units, in-vehicle display units, and application software for on-board computer, control centre/dispatcher system and central database management system. The AVLC system will use satellite tracking for bus location. The on-board computer will interface with the existing electronic ticketing machine. The system will track buses in real time and display bus locations to control centre supervisors. The control centre system will provide tools for monitoring the quality of the service on a route by route basis, indicating gaps in service or problems in schedule adherence. The control centre system will also provide a suite of regulation tools for taking corrective actions. The system will store operational data and provide reporting facilities to use with this data. The system will provide information to the public via in-vehicle display units, bus stop display units, WWW, WAP and SMS text messages. Of particular importance is the predicted arrival time of buses at specific bus stops. The system must be capable of providing for third party data exchange on an open standards basis, such that the system installed will be capable of delivering future integrated public transport information initiatives. A fleet of over 1 000 buses from a number of operators provides a network of public transport bus services in the South East Scotland. The on-bus system must be capable of supporting a significant expansion in the fleet size. Bus stop display units will be installed at selected stops only. The quantity of buses and stops to be equipped will be determined at a later date. Technical support and maintenance services will be required for the operational lifetime of the system.
