UK-London: construction work for university buildings
London South Bank University - anchor 1 - student centre. The functional content of the scheme is to provide a new home for Students' Union facilities (currently housed in the temporary students' union building whose planning consent expires in June 2012) and to consolidate in a single location all University student facing non-academic support services currently housed in many different buildings across the campus. The content will therefore include separate space (including interview rooms) for student advice by both from the union and the University, social learning space with café, a Student union bar and events space, a multi-use foyer area, building reception and open plan office space. A link may also be provided to Edric Hall. Externally the public realm around the new student centre will be improved as an integral part of the scheme. Public realm improvements will also be used to develop a link back to the centre of the campus via Kell St, which is currently a private back of house service road. Approx new build infill floor area that is propose to achieve would be in the order of 1 460 m², and refurbishment of the existing restaurant area and other currently unused space. The new space will be provided by installing 1½ storey glazed facades to both open elevation of the undercroft and a ground floor slab. Natural light will be introduced to the centre of the area at both ground and first floor by introducing structural openings in the existing concrete frame to create a roof light and atrium. The scheme will be sustainable in its use of existing structure, by connecting to existing building services and with the possible introduction of some renewable energy generating equipment.
