Food Standards Agency - FS102002 - An Investigation by Laser Ablation and Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry of the Gradation and Levels of Metal Contaminants in UK grown Fruits, Vegetables and Cereals - 2012/13. As part of their tender, applicants should, provide a detailed sampling plan that provides full information on; the reasoning behind the selected geographical sampling areas, soil and produce sampling methodology and the number and types of produce to be sampled. Applicants may also wish to demonstrate that seasonality, climate and produce availability have also been considered as part of the sampling strategy. Only UK grown fruits, vegetables, and cereal crops that are representative of products marketed throughout the whole of the UK should be sampled. It is envisaged that in addition to obtaining representative samples of soil, a minimum of 300 samples of produce will be required. A laser ablation method e.g. LA-ICP MS should be used for the gradation of arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, chromium, nickel, copper, iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, from the outer skin to the core of selected produce. For the quantitative analyses of these metals both in the sampled produce and soil, applicants should be able to demonstrate and provide the results of good proficiency testing to carry out the analyses e.g. evidence of satisfactory performance in FAPAS (Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme) or equivalent and be able to provide full details of the analyses of appropriate Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). Full details of the quantitative analytical methods to be used should also be included with any supporting information relating to its analytical performance (including duplicates), Limits of Detection (LOD) and validation. Samples should be retained by the contractor for a period of time (agreed with the Agency) in case further analyses are required. Applicants should also indicate their ability to undertake arsenic speciation analyses should this be required during the investigation.
