UK-Loughborough: boiler installation work
LU00310 – Central CHP Facility. Please note this is an Award notice for the appointment of a single supplier to construct, supply and commission a new CHP (Combined Heat Power) facility on the central park of Loughborough University. The estimated value of the construction, supply and commissioning element is circa GBP 2 000 000 and we consider this to be a mix of supplies and works and although below the works threshold we are proceeding on a voluntary basis via the works restricted procedure. The project will be procured as a single stage design and build process the details of which are included in supporting documentation which can be accessed via the electronic tendering tool referenced in section 1.1. It is likely that the design team will have already been appointed on the project and will be novated to the successful contractor. CPV: 45331110, 45111000, 45210000, 45400000. ...
UK-Gloucester: road construction works
A46 Coopers hill landslip. Gloucestershire Highways is leading the design and construction of slope stabilisation works for two adjacent areas affecting the A46 Painswick Road, to the south of Brockworth in Gloucestershire. The affected section of carriageway is approximately 250 metres long and passes over embanked and retained side long ground in an area of known landslip terrain. The defects comprise landslide-related tension cracks across both running lanes and structural cracking and down-slope rotation of a retaining wall. The tension cracking has associated subsidence of the carriageway over approximately a 40m length and whilst movements have been known to occur over the last 30 years, sudden and extensive movement was recorded in the summer of 2007 following the heavy rainfall and flooding experienced in the County during that time. Patch repairs have been undertaken since then to maintain ride quality. Monitoring of the site has proven movement to be ongoing. The 100 metre long retained section comprises a reinforced concrete king-post wall constructed in the mid 1920s.etained heights vary between 1.5m and 3.5m, and in recent years inspections have recorded forward and down-slope rotation at the eastern end, and shear cracking through many of the supporting columns. Subsidence and wash out of the retained soils has been more recently recorded, which may lead to the undermining of the carriageway and associated safety barrier in the short term. In recognition of the defects and the risk these pose to road users and the surrounding network, the site will require a substantial geotechnical/civils intervention to manage slope-related movement. The scheme will include ground improvement and construction of a new reinforced concrete retaining structure cast against the king-post wall. The ground improvement will be achieved using laterally-loaded, 406 mm diameter tubular steel, grout-filled CFA piles installed on a triangular grid, and 300 mm diameter grout-filled bored piles with H-pile inserts down-slope of the road, but all within highway land. The scheme will also include slope and road drainage improvements (including some within third party land), geotextile-reinforced pile cap, and road reconstruction. The new retaining wall will be in the form of inclined tension piles restraining in situ reinforced concrete panels cast against the king-post wall and supported on bored piles. Ground treatment in the area down-slope of the retaining wall will be in the form of 300mm diameter grout-filled bored piles with H-pile inserts. It is envisaged that a total of approximately 320 piles will be required. Traffic management with single lane closures will be required with ground improvement and retaining wall construction taking place simultaneously. The current programme shows construction taking place in late spring 2010. This is for the Works element only and is below OJEU threshold value. UK-Birmingham: construction work for university buildings
Provision of new entrance, library building and refurbishment works. Newman University College (NUC) was founded in 1968 in Bartley Green, Birmingham and is a University College offering academic degrees and teacher training. The University College prides itself on having the highest graduate employment rate of UK Universities. It is a Roman Catholic institution, although open to students regardless of religious beliefs and is named in honour of catholic intellectual John Henry Newman. NUC has approximately 2 500 students and 350 staff. As part of the NUC masterplan, Stage 1 will deliver a transformative, aspirational and inspiring 2-3 storey new Entrance Building. The new building will link together the existing Science and Arts Block and will include entrance areas, reception, glazed atrium space, library, teaching & meeting rooms, offices for academic and support staff, specialist science teaching space, WC's, plant area, storage, ancillary accommodation and new stairs and lifts. In addition existing accommodation located in the adjacent Arts and science blocks will be refurbished to accommodate a range of offices, teaching spaces and ancillary accommodation. The former library space in the Arts Block will be refurbished and converted to provide a Family research centre comprising a range of offices, flexible teaching and meeting spaces. The refurbishment works include the stripping out and installation of new internal walls, doors, finishes and services. The scope of the project also includes new campus wide access control systems, upgraded fire alarm systems and the provision of new energy efficient boiler installations. The refurbishment works will extend beyond the Arts Block along major circulation routes and will include new doors, finishes and services. The Library must remain functional throughout the construction period through phasing of the works which will necessitate the construction of the new Entrance Library during the first phase, decanting of the Library into the new building allowing the Phase 2 Refurbishment of the Arts Block and current Library Building to be undertaken. Design is currently progressing towards receipt of Planning Permission, with an anticipated construction date of July 2010. Note: the aforementioned works represent Stage 1 of the masterplan, with Stage 2 Performance Media Centre and Stage 3 Physical Education and Sports Science possibly proceeding as future aspirations of Newman University College (however, NUC does not guarantee that these works will be awarded to the appointed contractor and is subject to a satisfactory conclusion of Stage 1).
