External Assessment Centres for the Evaluation Pathway Programmes. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) is an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health and preventing and treating ill health. Documents describing the methods and processes employed by NICE in developing its guidance are available from the Institute's website (available at www.nice.org.uk). The evaluation pathway for medical technologies aims to simplify the route by which new medical technologies pass from development into NHS use. It identifies medical technologies that have the potential to offer substantial benefit to patients and/or the NHS and are likely to be adopted more consistently and more rapidly if NICE develops guidance on them. As well as enabling appropriate evaluation, it also encourages collaborative research between industry and the NHS to generate evidence on the clinical utility or longer term use of selected technologies, to ensure that NICE's recommendations on medical technologies remain current and relevant.
