EIS7208 E-Journals processing services. The Digital Library Programme is the British Library's strategic response to the long-term transition from print to digital information resources. The programme was created to design, plan, develop and implement a secure, reliable and scalable management system for the Library's digital content assets. The resulting Digital Library System (DLS) provides a single system to manage the ingest, storage, preservation, discovery of and controlled access to digital content. The Digital Library System currently contains over 850 000 items, including 65 000 digitised books, 200 000 legacy newspapers, 30 000 digital sound recordings, 11 000 eJournal articles and over 480 000 items received as digital donations. The total volume of items in the store stands at 95 Terabytes (TB) and grows daily. We make this content discoverable through our integrated catalogue and access is controlled by rights management software. In October 2009, the Library undertook a detailed review of the eJournals landscape, in order to determine the best way forward for processing XML formatted full text eJournals. One of the key recommendations of the review was to investigate to what extent the British Library could outsource some, or all, of the processing of these eJournals to a third party.
