UK-Birmingham: sound insulation work
Birmingham Airport Sound Insulation Scheme. Birmingham Airport has operated a Sound Insulation Grant Scheme since 1978. The scheme provides sound-proofing glazing to properties in areas most affected by aircraft noise. The scheme is open to over 7 600 properties in areas around the airport and over 90 % of these properties have already benefited from the scheme. In 2001 the Airport Company looked to the future and carried out extensive discussions with local residents, ward committees, local councillors, the Airport Consultative Committee and acoustics industry specialists, to find out what people think about sound-proofing. Based on the results of this exercise a new scheme has been devised. This continues to offer secondary glazing to those properties within the original scheme boundary that have not already taken up the offer of secondary glazing. In addition we have created Phase II for those properties closest to the Airport. Properties within this boundary for Phase II of the Sound Insulation Scheme are eligible for repeat grants. These grants are a one off opportunity for householders to improve the noise climate in their homes and can be used for High Specification Double Glazing or replacement secondary glazing, acoustic ventilator units (compulsory item) and acoustic loft insulation. Innovative Foundations. The contract(s) to be awarded concerns the design, fabrication, supply and installation of up to ten foundations and substructures for the support of 6MW-class wind turbine generators (WTGs). These WTGs will be provided by the contracting entity and the contractor(s) is obliged to co-operate with the WTG supplier in the execution of this contract. The transition pieces to establish connection between foundation and substructure with the steel tower supporting this turbine shall be provided by the contractor(s). A maximum of three separate EPCI contracts could be awarded to supply these ten foundations & substructures. 'Floating foundation' and substructure concepts are prohibited. In this context, 'Floating foundations' are foundation and substructure concepts where buoyancy is a main component required for structural stability after installation. In contrast, floating transport is allowed. The contract(s) will be only awarded to innovative foundation substructure concepts. These concepts must fit into one of the following design scopes: a) Provision of a four pile steel foundation(s) and steel jacket substructure based on the steel jacket basic design developed for the standard Innogy Nordsee 1 substructure foundation and provided by the contracting entity during the negotiated procedure.
