UK-Durham: designs
Physics Research Facility at Durham University. Durham University intends to appoint a Design Team to manage the design process for the building of its brand new prestigious Physics Research Facility, to be constructed at the Universitys Science Site (which is its main campus) on South Road, Durham, DH1 3LE, UK. Durham University has one of the leading Physics and Astronomy departments in the UK, involved in both undergraduate teaching and scientific research. The new facility will complement the existing Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics, which is home to the Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology and to the Institute for Computational Cosmology. The existing Ogden Centre is also the base for the Universitys innovative outreach programme for school children and their teachers. Whilst the brief is still being finalised, the new facility is to comprise a mix of offices, research meeting rooms, interaction/social space, research outreach space, preparation room, cold computer room and highly specified laboratories. In total, the area of the new facility is to be between circa 2 500 m2 and 3 000 m2, and the site identified to house this building is located to the west of the existing Physics Building and is currently used for car parking. It is thought that the new facility should be two or three storeys high, and is to be an important landmark building for the University. Consideration should be given to the fact that the site lies in a highly sensitive area from a Town Planning perspective, given its proximity to the area designated as Durhams UNESCO World Heritage site, with Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle located nearby. The overall project budget set aside for this prestigious new project is between circa 11 000 000 and 13 000 000 GBP depending on the final brief; the overall project budget is deemed to include all construction costs, fit out costs, professional fees and VAT. There is no land acquisition required as the University already owns the freehold of the proposed site for the new facility. The proposed procurement route for the new facility is to be a single stage design and build contract with a fixed lump sum price. It is proposed that the successful Design Team will ultimately be novated to the successful Contractor, from RIBA Design Stage D or later. The process for appointing the Design Team will require the short-listed Designers to prepare a Concept Design to be submitted together with fee proposals. Both elements will be evaluated to appoint the successful Design Team. The Concept Design will allow Architects and their Design Team members to express their vision for the new facility. Designs must be practical, deliverable, represent value for money and be capable of being constructed within the budget, but nevertheless must also be impressive, state of the art and of high technological virtuosity, being a new focal point for Physics Research at Durham University.
