Central Back Up System (CBS). The University of Leeds is seeking to purchase a Central Backup System to provide data protection and disaster recovery facilities. The solution will need to expand to incorporate growth in the volume of data protected while also accommodating changing numbers and types of clients throughout its life. The headline requirements are: 1. A phased approach to replacing the existing Central Backup System. The design of a backup architecture, an installation strategy and a migration plan that will enable the University to seamlessly migrate its existing backup facilities onto the new system. 2. The new system will be required to coexist with the existing system for several months. The current CBS consists of two Scalar i2000 tape libraries containing a combination of LTO2 and LTO3 drives. The software currently used to perform the backups is EMC Networker. 3. A solution capable of supporting the backup of a range of operating systems and applications. These will include, but are not exclusive to, Windows, Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Exchange, SQL, Oracle, Sharepoint, Hyper V, VMware and Celerra NAS. Approximately 500 servers are backed up to tape using the current system. 4. The current raw data volume protected is in the order of 75 TB. The new solution should be capable of protecting around threefold this volume from day 1, between 180 and 200 TB of raw data. 5. Further expansion of the hardware infrastructure and software to protect at least 450TB of raw data should be possible over its 5 year life. This expansion should avoid the need to swap out existing devices, not require labour intensive data migration activities and minimise increases to management overheads. 6.
