Dublin City public libraries - supply of books, DVDs & audio books. Dublin City Public Libraries (DCPL) is the public library service operated by Dublin City Council, the largest local authority in Ireland. DCPL provides a wide and diverse range of library services to the citizens of Dublin City (population in excess of 500 000) through its network of branch libraries (23) throughout the city. It also operates a Central Library in the city centre with a dedicated business information centre, a music library and learning centre; a reference library concentrating on materials of Dublin and Irish interest; a mobile library service; and a library for Dublin City Council staff focussing on topics of professional interest. Dublin was designated a UNESCO City of Literature in July 2010. DCPL has a major role in the development of this brand and is the administrator of the acclaimed International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Computer system. DCPL uses Galaxy 2000/OpenGalaxy library management system supplied by Axiell. The acquisitions process is fully automated. Acquisitions. All purchasing is managed centrally. The acquisitions section is situated in the Bibliographic Centre, Navan Road, Dublin 7. All deliveries are currently to one location, the Bibliographic Centre. It is the intention of DCPL to investigate / develop distributed deliveries during the course of this contract. Selection Policy. Books: DCPL's selection policy is based on in-depth coverage of Dublin and Irish-related material and the acquisition of fiction, non-fiction and general reference material for branch libraries, bearing in mind the educational, recreational and leisure roles of the public library service. DCPL also has a responsibility to build and maintain specialised collections and information services appropriate to the public library service of a capital city. Children's material is chosen by specialised staff on the basis of its quality, content and suitability in relation to the age group for which it is intended. DCPL's aim is to have new material available to library members as soon as possible after publication and to respond rapidly to readers' requests. DVDs: DCPL's policy is to provide a selection of DVDs for adults based on literature or plays in support of its book collections. A range of non-fiction titles is also required in line with the educational, recreational and leisure interests of the general public. DVDs for children are provided – across all age ranges. DVDs with IFCO classification 18 are not selected. Audio books: DCPL aims to provide a range of audio books, including international and Irish best-selling authors, as soon as possible after publication of print edition. A broad range of language learning sets is also provided. Audio material suitable for children from baby to 12 years of age is provided. DCPL's aim, for both DVDs and audio books, is to have new material available to user library members as soon as possible after publication and to respond rapidly to borrower requests. Lending Policy. DCPL does not charge for lending of any materials. Membership of the library service is open to all who live and/or work in Dublin City.
