UK-London: survey conduction services
1970 British Cohort Study – Age 42 Follow-Up The Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) at the Institute of Education, University of London (UK) is seeking tenders from survey research agencies to carry out the instrument development, data collection and initial data processing for the Age 42 Follow-Up of the 1970 British Cohort Study. The 1970 British Cohort Study is a continuing multi-disciplinary longitudinal study which takes as its subjects all those living in England, Scotland and Wales who were born in one week in 1970. BCS70 began when data were collected about the births and families of just under 17,200 babies born in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in a particular week in April, 1970. (Subjects from Northern Ireland, who had been included in the birth survey, were dropped from the study in all subsequent sweeps). Since 1970 there have been seven attempts to recontact and gather information from the whole cohort. From the original focus on the circumstances and outcomes of birth, the study has broadened in scope to map all aspects of health, education and social development of the cohort as they passed through childhood and adolescence. In latter sweeps, the information collected has covered their transitions into adult life, including leaving full time education, entering the labour market, setting up independent homes, forming partnerships and becoming parents. The ninth sweep will take place when cohort members are aged 42. Data collection will involve home visits to cohort members across the whole of Great Britain and data will be collected from cohort members in two ways: 1) a 75 minute Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) 2) an additional self-completion questionnaire to be completed either on paper or online. It is anticipated that around 11,500 cohort members will be invited to participate. All interviews must be completed between May 2012 and December 2012. The survey research agency will be required to: — Work closely with CLS to design and develop the data collection instruments. The agency will be responsible for the production of all instruments including all CAI programming required. — Supply and train interviewers to collect the data and monitor and oversee their work to ensure that the data collection is carried out on schedule and to a high standard. — Carry out initial data processing i.e. coding, editing and data checking prior to delivering the data to CLS and provide full documentation of the data collection instruments.
