UK-Glasgow: construction work for steel bridges
A898 Erskine bridge vehicle barrier replacement works. The A898 Erskine Bridge was opened to traffic in 1971 and is a 15 span, 1321m long cable stayed orthotropic steel box girder bridge, spanning the River Clyde upstream of Dumbarton connecting West Dunbartonshire with Renfrewshire. The structure comprises a central box girder approximately the same width as the dual carriageway with cantilever beams supporting the footways and cycletracks on either side. The main cable stayed river span is approx. 305m long and is approx. 60m above the river level. The bridge footway cantilevers support water and gas mains. To protect the towers and cable anchorages located within the central reserve main spans it is proposed to replace the existing vehicle barriers with very high containment (H4a) barriers of open, post and rail systems with post spacing to match the existing bridge deck diaphragms spaced at approx. 4.3m centres. Normal containment (N2) barriers with similar post spacing of 4.3m to coincide with the internal stiffening diaphragms are to be provided along the remaining length of the central reserve, i.e. in the approach spans. The works contract also includes the replacement of the existing non-standard nearside vehicle barriers along the full length of the bridge with H4a barriers similar to those for the central reserve cable spans to protect the bridge cantilevers. Any such barriers and associated transitions shall have been tested for compliance with BS EN 1317. It is envisaged that localised under-deck strengthening mainly comprising strengthening of the trough to deck welds will be required under the new barrier posts. Fixing of the new barrier posts to the bridge deck would involve localised removal of the existing 35mm Epoxy Asphalt road surfacing on 3mm Cicol ET waterproofing layer and welding tapped deck plates to receive the new barrier post holding down bolts followed by reinstatement of the waterproofing and surfacing around the deck plate. Extensive traffic management involving continuous lane closures and associated traffic diversions will be required to enable safe implementation of the works. It is anticipated that the works would also include maintenance painting of the 2 no. tapered bridge towers located within the central reserve using the traffic management for the central reserve barrier replacement works. The structural design has been undertaken in accordance with Eurocodes and the DMRB and the specification is in accordance with the manual contract document for Highways Works (MCDHW) with amendments to suit the Eurocodes requirements. The contract type will be based on the ICE 5th Edition with bespoke amendments to suit a lump sum fixed price, Employer's Design. The contract will be a lane occupation type contract.
