The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, is the foremost Maritime Museum in the world and a key attraction in the Greenwich World Heritage site. The Museum itself comprises the National Maritime Museum, Queen's House and the Royal Observatory. The Museum is undergoing a period of redevelopment. This ambitious forward plan sees the redevelopment of the existing heart of the Museum and its surrounding galleries as well as the initiation of a regular programme of major temporary exhibitions in the Sammy Ofer Wing opening summer 2011. Included in this planned work is a new permanent gallery exploring the Royal Navy and its relationship with Britain from 1688 – 1815. Visitors will discover how the alliance of navy and nation profoundly influenced how the British saw themselves and their place in the world. The new gallery will place the life of Admiral Lord Nelson within this broader historical context. The new Naval Gallery will be installed into an existing 450 SqM gallery on the top floor of the Museum. Through unrivalled collections and innovative display techniques, the gallery will deliver a rich and immersive experience to visitors.
