UK-Bristol: data collection and collation services
Organ donation and transplantation data collection services. The Organ donation and transplantation directorate of NHS Blood and transplant (NHSBT) holds the UK National transplant registry. This is a database that records the details of those listed for a solid organ and corneal transplant, those who have received a transplant and the donors of the organs and tissue used in these transplants. The database is used not only to support the matching and allocation of donated organs for use in transplantation but also to support clinical analysis and audit. As well as recording information at the time each patient joins the transplant list and at the time of transplant, each patient is followed up at 3 months post transplant and annually thereafter to monitor the progress of the patient and the transplant. In order to assist transplant and renal units throughout the UK in making the required data returns, NHSBT provides several methods by which data can be submitted one of which is a data collection service. The service is focused mainly on the collection of post transplant follow-up data and requires visits to those hospitals using the service to collect the required data from hospital systems, both paper and electronic. The data is then recorded by the data collector on to a paper form which the collector will then send to NHSBT for processing. Key to the service is accuracy of data capture, the ability to meet prescribed timescales for the collection and submission of each form type and the ability to achieve specified percentage collection rates.
