The provision of engineering management services for the EU High Research (HiPER) project, & the STFC Centre for advanced laser technology and applications (CALTA) project. HiPER is a proposed European High Power laser energy research facility dedicated to demonstrating the feasibility of laser driven fusion as a future energy source. The preparatory phase of the HiPER project commenced in April 2008 and completes in June 2013. The end of the phase coincides with a planned proof of principle demonstration of the physics of laser driven fusion at the National Ignition Facility, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, USA. This is a contract position, reporting directly to the HiPER project director. The proposed duration is 21 months with one month notice of termination by either party. The role requires the following skills base: We are seeking a Chartered Engineer with an accomplished cross-disciplined background in complex project management and engineering management, particularly in the early formative stages of very large projects where a flexible approach is essential. This experience will have been gained in a scientific, multi-disciplinary, multi-site environment and must include experience of working within nuclear licensed sites overseeing building design, special materials containment systems and formulating input to safety case documentation for regulators. The Chartered Engineer we are seeking will ideally have knowledge of the technical field of high power lasers in respect of its associated effects on the design and implementation of buildings and plant. You will also have knowledge of process, procedures, contracting strategies, estimating, risk management and regulatory issues associated with the design and implementation of complex state of the art nuclear projects.
