Personal robotics (PR2) system. The University is procuring a highly specialist Personal Robot (PRS) system from Willow Garage for Research and Innovation. Basically purchasing the PR2 comes with an added bonus that we do not only acquire a robot from the purchase but also we become part of an open source community whose global aim is to make code and programs available for all in the hope that it will bring robotics closer to everyday life. If we all work together we can achieve this. Being part of this community means that we have continued support from other labs using the PR2, which will be highly beneficial. Personal robot applications enable people to make themselves more productive at home and at work. PR2 combines the mobility to navigate human environments and the dexterity to grasp and manipulate objects in those environments. PR2 will allow the university to concentrate on our specific field, while taking advantage of the work of specialists in other areas. The PR2 hardware platform and 1 000+ software libraries enable us, as a member of the community, to focus on new capabilities. The common platform also lets useasily share our research results in a way that is reproducible. The PR2 is an open platform. We can change the system to meet our needs at any level.
