UK-Bromley, Kent: Chislehurst Road Bridge replacement. Chislehurst Road Bridge carries the single carriageway A208 over Network Rail's four track Victoria to Ramsgate mainline railway between Bickley and St Mary Cray Stations. The existing bridge is in a poor condition and has been subject to numerous inspections, special investigations and assessments over the last fifteen years to determine the extent of the structural deterioration. The latest inspections and assessments carried out in 2008 indicated that the load carrying capacity had reduced significantly and the bridge was restricted to 7.5 tonne vehicles, resulting in the diversion of a bus route. A number of strengthening options were examined before the bridge was recommended to be replaced. The works will therefore involve the demolition of an existing 33m single span post tensioned concrete beam road-over-railway bridge and construction of a replacement integral steel composite bridge over the railway. Detail design of the replacement bridge structure will be provided by the Employer, however the Potential Provider shall be required to design the permanent FRP enclosure and all temporary works required for demolition and execution in accordance with Network Rail approvals procedures. Existing utilities and the pedestrian right of way across railway cutting are to be maintained during construction; however the road will be closed to vehicular traffic for the duration. Only short white period possessions of the railway are available for the works. The site is very congested with private residential properties on three corners and National Trust ancient woodland in close proximity on the fourth corner together with large mature trees in the approach road verges. Specialist work on this scheme includes demolition of the existing post tensioned structure, piling, steelwork fabrication & erection and design & installation of the FRP enclosure. The Potential Provider shall hold a current Network Rail Principal Contractor's Licence and shall demonstrate their experience in undertaking the following types of work: Steel composite bridge construction. Bridge construction in possessions over a railway line. Demolition of road-over-railway structures. Driven steel pile installation in urban areas.
